California Launches Real ID Campaign to Educate Residents on New Requirements
As the October 2020 deadline for REAL ID compliance looms, California has launched a new campaign to educate residents about the new identification requirements. The campaign, titled “Get REAL CA,” aims to inform Californians about the importance of obtaining a REAL ID card in order to continue using their driver’s license for domestic air travel, as well as access to federal facilities and nuclear power plants.
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with the goal of enhancing security measures for identification cards. The Act requires all states to issue compliant identification cards that meet federal standards in order to be used for official government purposes. California began issuing REAL ID cards in January 2018, but many residents are still unaware of the new requirements.
“We want to make sure that all Californians are aware of the upcoming deadline and take the necessary steps to obtain a REAL ID card,” said Gavin Newsom, Governor of California. “The ‘Get REAL CA’ campaign is designed to provide residents with the information they need to make the transition as smooth as possible.”
Under the REAL ID Act, residents will need to provide documentation that proves their identity, legal presence in the United States, Social Security number, and residency in California. This documentation includes a valid passport or birth certificate, a Social Security card or W-2 form, and two proofs of California residency, such as a utility bill or rental agreement.
To apply for a REAL ID card, residents must visit a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in person. The DMV has also launched a new online tool that allows residents to pre-fill the application form and make an appointment to visit a DMV office. This online tool is designed to streamline the application process and reduce wait times at DMV offices.
“We understand that obtaining a REAL ID card can be a confusing and time-consuming process, which is why we have introduced new tools and resources to help residents navigate the requirements,” said Steve Gordon, Director of the California DMV. “We encourage all Californians to start the application process as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute rush.”
In addition to the online tool, the “Get REAL CA” campaign includes a series of informational videos, social media posts, and print materials that provide residents with step-by-step instructions on how to apply for a REAL ID card. The campaign also features outreach events at community centers, libraries, and DMV offices to help residents with the application process.
“I had no idea that I needed a REAL ID card until I saw a poster at my local library,” said Maria Sanchez, a resident of Los Angeles. “I’m glad that the state is making an effort to educate us about the new requirements. I’ll be sure to apply for my REAL ID card soon.”
As the deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, California officials are urging residents to act quickly to avoid any disruptions in travel or access to federal facilities. Residents who do not have a REAL ID card by October 2020 will need to present an alternative form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings.
“We want to make sure that all Californians are prepared for the upcoming changes and have the proper identification they need,” said Governor Newsom. “By working together and staying informed, we can ensure a smooth transition to the REAL ID system.”
