California residents seeking to obtain a new state-issued ID card are facing new challenges as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) implements changes to the application process. The online application for a California ID card is now mandatory, with in-person appointments required for those without internet access.
The DMV has cited the shift to online applications as a way to streamline the process and reduce long wait times at DMV offices. However, some residents are voicing concerns about the new requirements, particularly those without reliable internet access or digital literacy skills.

“We want to ensure that the identification cards we issue are accurate and secure,” said Ramirez. “By requiring additional proof of identity and residency, we can better protect against identity theft and fraud.”
Some residents have expressed frustration with the new proof of residency requirements, particularly those who do not have traditional forms of documentation such as a lease or utility bill in their name. The DMV has indicated that it will work with individuals on a case-by-case basis to find alternative forms of proof of residency.
