New Jersey State Police Issue Over 50,000 Firearms ID Cards in 2021
The New Jersey State Police have reported that they issued over 50,000 firearms ID cards in 2021, reflecting a significant increase in the number of residents seeking to legally purchase and possess firearms in the state.
According to a spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police, the surge in applications for firearms ID cards is likely due to a combination of factors, including concerns about personal safety in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and calls for defunding the police.
“We have seen a notable uptick in the number of residents applying for firearms ID cards in recent months,” said the spokesperson. “While we cannot pinpoint a single reason for this increase, it appears that many people are seeking to exercise their Second Amendment rights and protect themselves and their families during these uncertain times.”
The process of applying for a firearms ID card in New Jersey is stringent, with applicants required to undergo a thorough background check, submit to fingerprinting, and provide character references. In addition, applicants must demonstrate a justifiable need for the card, such as a history of threats or a profession that requires carrying a firearm.
Despite the rigorous requirements, the New Jersey State Police have been able to process applications in a timely manner, with the average processing time for a firearms ID card being approximately 90 days. However, due to the increase in applications, there have been some delays in processing times, with some applicants waiting up to six months to receive their cards.
“We understand that the wait times can be frustrating for applicants, but we are working diligently to process applications as quickly as possible,” said the spokesperson. “We have brought in additional staff to help with the increased workload, and we are committed to ensuring that all applicants receive a fair and timely review of their applications.”
In addition to the increase in firearms ID card applications, the New Jersey State Police have also reported a rise in the number of background checks conducted for firearm purchases. According to data from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), there were over 300,000 background checks conducted in New Jersey in 2021, marking a 20% increase from the previous year.
While the surge in firearms ID card applications and background checks may be concerning to some, advocates for gun rights argue that it reflects a growing interest in responsible gun ownership and self-defense.
