South Carolina Begins Issuing New State IDs with Enhanced Security Features
COLUMBIA, SC – In an effort to combat identity theft and fraud, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) has announced the release of new state identification cards with enhanced security features. The new IDs, which will be issued to all residents of South Carolina, are designed to better protect personal information and prevent unauthorized use of state-issued identification.
The decision to upgrade the state ID cards comes after a rise in identity theft cases across South Carolina, prompting state officials to take action to protect residents’ personal information. The new IDs will feature advanced security measures that make it more difficult for criminals to create counterfeit or fake identification cards.
“We are committed to keeping the people of South Carolina safe and secure, and that includes protecting their personal information from being stolen or misused,” said SCDMV Director, Kevin Shwedo. “These new state IDs are a major step forward in improving the security of our identification system and preventing identity theft.”
Some of the enhanced security features of the new state IDs include:
– A holographic overlay that is visible from multiple angles, making it difficult to replicate.
– A bar code that contains encrypted information about the cardholder, making it easier to verify the authenticity of the card.
– UV light-reactive ink that is only visible under ultraviolet light, providing an additional layer of security against counterfeiting.
– A microchip embedded in the card that stores biometric information to further protect against identity theft.
Residents of South Carolina will have the option to upgrade to the new state IDs at no additional cost. The SCDMV will begin issuing the new IDs in phases, starting with residents who are due for renewal or applying for a new ID. Existing cardholders will be notified by mail when they are eligible for a new ID.
